In my work I seek to create beauty by breaking down the natural world into pattern and design. My background in horticulture and floral design play a pivotal role in my choice of subject matter. My education in ecology and geography has helped train my eye to analyze nature’s complex and simple forms. This scientific attention to detail helps inform my decisions about the landscapes and botanicals that I render in my paintings.
I paint primarily on canvas with some variance using glass, mixed media and ceramics. I find inspiration in the color palette of Fauvism and the line work of Miro. I am strongly influenced by art nouveau and art deco pattern and product design. I carry within a deep appreciation for the motifs of Japanese culture, architecture and artwork. Specifically, I gravitate towards the work of many contemporary and traditional Japanese painters; I feel a lineage with their unique translations of the natural world and sensitive understanding of space on the two-dimensional plane. I see my artwork as a spiritual consideration of natural elements and human design that I regard as beautiful.
